NIV 1984 vs. NIV 2011

What Changed in the New NIV?

If you grew up with the NIV, you may notice familiar verses read a little differently today. Here are some of the most noticeable updates.

Why the update? The NIV is reviewed by an independent group of scholars, the Committee on Bible Translation. They update it as biblical scholarship and everyday English change. The 2011 edition replaced the 1984 edition, which is no longer published.

What stayed the same? Most of the text. The changes are mostly about word choice, not core beliefs. Many readers simply prefer the edition they know best, and both are welcome here.

Only the changed wording is shown. Tap “Read the full verse” to see the current NIV in context on BibleGateway.
